Here's a simple overview and a bit of direction on dealing with our household waste in Rheenendal.
Rubbish Day
Household waste collection, by Knysna Municipality, happens on a Tuesday (usually early morning) from the roadside.
- Rubbish needs to be in black plastic bags, closed tightly.
- Building rubble and garden waste cannot be included and need to be disposed of yourself.
- Spills from torn bags should be cleaned up immediately to avoid spreading rubbish down the road.
- Wheelie bins prevent bags from being torn open by monkeys and can be ordered from the municipality.
- Bags not collected by the end of the day should be removed and put out again the next day to avoid being torn open during the night.

Volunteering for the greater community
The Phantom Homtini Nature Conservancy is privately and voluntarily run by a small group of locals. The protection of our local fauna and flora (which includes cleanup and recycling projects in Rheenendal and Keurhoek) is its core focus.

N2 Turnoff
The lovely garden at the waiting area, at the N2-turnoff transformed this horrible eyesore to a beautiful introduction to our neighbourhood. The strategically placed rubbish bin assists in reducing littering from taxis along the Rheenendal road.

Road Cleanup
The litter along our road is picked up, in sections, every second Monday – from the N2-turnoff to Portland. It really is a never-ending job. Residents are requested to contribute to the project by means of a fixed annual donation to the PHNC.

Swop Shop
Born in 2011, the Swop Shop is a recycling and donation-based initiative in Keurhoek. The community (especially the kids) collect recyclable waste, which is weighed and earns them tokens, which they can swop for goods in the shop. All goods are donated.

As part of the Phantom Homtini Nature Conservancy's projects, the Swop Shop is run by the NPO Suurvlakte Initiative.
The concept is to create an organic system of education on both recycling and earning (rather than just receiving handouts). Residents collect recyclable waste, which is weighed and paid for with tokens. These tokens can be swopped in the shop for goods.
Apart from teaching children the value of earning, it is also reducing a staggering amount of waste, which otherwise would've just accumulated in the neighbourhood.
The Swop Shop always requires donations in any form – money, food, clothing, stationery, toys and anything which tokens can be exchanged for.
Ideally, the vision is to marry with other groups, create a donation stream, and keep the swop shop standing and operational. If you have contact with any organisation, church group or individual able to assist in keeping the shop shelves stocked, please reach out to us.
